Abstract:
“Zhe” in the structure of “V+Zhe” sounding as [ ] in Wenzhou dialect (used in urban area) can be either stressed or unstressed. When it is unstressed, it sounds as “dao”, which functions as Wei complement word or as a component for “yongzhe”, an auxiliary verb (which means “OK”) . When stressed, it is used as a complement. This “zhe” is associated with “zhuo” in “zhilueqie” of “yao rhymes”. It is very possible that “yao”, a function word meaning “finish” in Wenzhou dialect, originated from the “que” in “quyueqie” of “yao rhymes”. In Wenzhou dialect, the conjunction which implies supposing also sounds as [ ], but it may not be a sounding deformation of “ruo” in “erzhuoqie” of yao rhymes; it may as well evolve from “zhuo” in “zhilueqie” of yao rhymes. In modern Chinese, “zhuo (zhe)” has gone through a evolving process from “need” to “ought to” and finally to “if”. Now these three definitions remain in Wenzhou dialect.
