Abstract:In the early days of the Republic of China, local people had proposed the idea of demolishing the Wenzhou City Wall, but the actual demolition would not begin until the construction of Zhongshan Park. In 1934, the government selected city gates located on traffic arteries, widened the gates and demolished the Moon City. From 1938 to 1939, due to the impact of the war, the city walls were demolished on a large scale, and most of the city walls were demolished. Since then, the city walls have been dismantled sporadically for the purpose of paving roads, building air raid trenches, and building docks. Factors such as municipal construction, transportation, defense, and war were the main reasons that affected the retention or demolition of Wenzhou"s city walls during the Republic of China.
